When Andrei graduated from his PhD program last year, I wanted to do something fun instead of a plain ‘ole cake. Clearly the only option remaining to me was to create a set of absurdly elaborate mad scientist cookies… I fully admit that these took me an incredibly long time to make, simply because this was my first experience working with multiple colors of royal icing on multiple cookie designs. I used this tutorial from Bake at 350 to make the royal icing, and I asked my sweet little sister to help.
I used round cookie cutters for the atoms, hazard symbols, and petri dishes. For the quirkier shapes, I drew a design onto parchment paper, cut it out, and used it as a stencil. I laid the parchment shape over the dough and then traced around it with a paring knife. Like I said, not the quickest project I’ve ever made.
Sorry for the terrible photo quality – this was in the middle of a whole bunch o’ graduation and family visit and move chaos, so I didn’t really have time or space to make these look nearly as glamorous as they actually were. 😉
If anybody’s interested, I can create a template to cut out the beaker, flask, and lab coat shapes on parchment paper as a future free download. Just let me know in the comments!
