we desperately need your help

I have been working on a new project for awhile now. I, along with a friend in my graduate program, have started a nonprofit called Bridges Beyond Borders to mentor young refugees. I have partnered with a local middle school, and we will have 15 mentors and 15 refugee students for our first semester. I am hoping to provide each student with a brand new backpack stuffed with every single item on their school supply list, and I plan to have an event every couple months to bring the refugee students, their families, and my mentors together. I have found a sponsor, Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, to provide lots of books so that our refugee children have something to take home with them – something to call their own. These children will have the college-student mentor in their lives for an entire year, boosting their confidence, their academic achievement, and their ability to adjust to a new culture.

This has nothing to do with Shrimp Salad Circus, so why am I telling you all about it? Well, in order to provide backpacks to our kids and to hold family events, I need to raise some money. I have decided to do this by asking people from the community to ‘sponsor’ a refugee student for $50. Fifty bucks isn’t much in the grand scheme of things, and it can make such a difference to a child in need. Soooo I was thinking, I have some wonderful readers, and I know that many of you are involved in your communities and often give to others who have very little. How would you guys like to sponsor one of our refugees? This blog is a huge part of my life now, and it would make me so happy to see you guys take part in something that is going to change so many lives for the positive.

I am asking you to donate what you can – a dollar, five dollars, anything. Your spare cash will light up a small life. We need your help. A small difference for you will make a big difference for a child who has just given up everything they had in the world and fled their war-torn home for a strange and confusing place. Please help. Please give what you can. Please share this on your blog, your Facebook, your Twitter, or e-mail it to friends and family. I need your help to make an impact, and I know that you are the sort of people who will do just that. Just $50 could make such a big change.

I understand that some of you simply don’t have an extra dollar, so please just help by spreading the word.
