Learn how to make a no-sew DIY magic sequin pillow that your kids will love to play with!
I’ve partnered with Beacon Adhesives again!
Last time, we made a set of adorable rhinestone pouches with free stencils for rhinestone patterns.
This time, we’re going to make two different mermaid sequin pillow designs.
The best part about this project is that you don’t have to sew a single stitch to make it!
That’s right — you don’t need any sewing supplies at all.
And these mermaid sequin pillows are as much a fun toy as they are home decor.
I mean, look how excited Miss Cricket is with her heart pillow!
I can’t handle those wonderfully chubby little fingers, you guys!
What Are Magic Sequins?
Don’t have a clue what I’m talking about? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.
Magic sequin fabric is also known as mermaid sequins, flip sequins, or reversible sequins.
It’s a stretchy fabric covered in rows of shiny, often iridescent sequins. When you run your fingers or hands along the sequins, they flip directions.
The sequins are a different color on the other side, so you can draw designs in them.
And then, much like an Etch-a-Sketch or a Magna Doodle, you can “erase” the design and start over from scratch for endless fun!
The Best Part? They’re No-Sew!
I have plenty of sewing projects if that’s what you’re into. But I know that a ton of you don’t own a sewing machine and are in the “ain’t nobody got time for that” camp when it comes to hand-stitching.
My magic wand for this project is Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac because it’s basically a sewing machine in a bottle.
There are several fabric glue options at the craft store, but here are a few reasons to opt for Fabri-Tac:
- It goes on crystal clear, and it dries that way, too.
- It’s fast-grab and fast-drying, so you can get through a project quickly.
- It’s super strong. Seriously. The Beacon folk do a ton of testing.
- It’s machine-washable, so you could use it for hemming clothes.
Oh, and if you’re not the type to buy single-purpose craft supplies, don’t worry. This one works on lots of materials, not just fabric: wood, fabric on glass (like lace on votive candle holders), upholstery, fabric on metal, and more.
DIY Magic Sequin Pillow: Two Ways
I was going to just make one of these flip sequin pillows, and then when I went to the fabric store, I couldn’t make up my mind.
So naturally I ended up having to make two pillows.
Whether you’re a beginner or an old pro at all things DIY, both of these designs will be perfect for you!
How to Make a Solid Magic Sequin Pillow
Supplies
- 13″ x 17″ flip sequin fabric
- 13″ x 17″ faux fur or other fabric of your choice
- Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac
- 12″ x 16″ pillow insert
- Sharp scissors
- Clothespins or binder clips
- Sewing tape measure or ruler
- Pencil
* You can use any size pillow insert you want, depending on the size of finished pillow you want. But to make it easier for you, I listed the sizes I used for the pillow and fabric. In the instructions, I’ll share how to figure out the measurements you need for any size pillow insert.
Instructions
1. Measure and mark both pieces of fabric on their wrong (back) sides. Add an inch to the size of your pillow insert, and mark the fabric accordingly.
For example, this pillow insert is 16″ x 12″ so I marked my fabric at 17″ and 13″.
2. Cut both pieces of fabric. They should be identical sizes.
Tip: Use really sharp scissors or a rotary cutter to cut through the sequins easily.
3. Add a generous bead a Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac along the top of the right (front) side of your backing fabric. Place the glue a little more than 1/4″ from the edge.
Make sure you glue on the the side of the fabric that will be on the outside of the pillow!
4. Place the sequin fabric face-down over the glue, and press firmly. The pretty sides of the fabric should be glued together facing each other, with the back sides facing out.
5. Glue along the two sides, and press it together. You want to keep the glue a little more than 1/4″ from the edges.
6. Let the pillow case dry for a little while, and then flip it right-side out. You can use a pencil or chopstick to poke the corners out if they stay bunched up.
7. Gently slide the pillow insert into the case.
8. Fold the back fabric and the sequin fabric in on themselves at the open side of the pillow case.
9. Add a line of Fabri-Tac to the back fabric, and pinch both fabrics together. Use clothespins to clamp it together for a few minutes so that the pillow insert doesn’t push the seam apart.
Tip: Glue this last seam together a few inches at a time since it can be a little bit tricky.

3. Fold a sheet of paper in half, and draw a half heart. Cut it out. Lay the heart in the middle of one of your pieces of fabric to see if you like the size. If not, cut it down smaller, or make a larger one.
4. Trace the heart onto the back of the mermaid sequin fabric with your pencil.
5. Cut out the heart using very sharp scissors. Shake off any loose sequin bits.
6. Make a line all the way around the edges of the back of the heart with the Fabri-Tac.
7. Place the heart in the center of the pillow, and press the edges down firmly.
8. Trace back around the border of the heart with the Fabri-Tac. Place the sequin trim all the way around the heart. Press it down firmly.
Snip off any excess sequin trim or threads when you get to the end.
9. Add a generous bead a Fabri-Tac along the top of the right (front) side of the heart fabric. Place the glue a little more than 1/4″ from the edge.
10. Place the faux fur fabric face-down over the glue, and press firmly. The pretty sides of the fabric should be glued together facing each other, with the back sides facing out.
