How to Make Grinch Bath Bombs for Ornaments

Supplies

The list below includes links (mostly Amazon Prime!) to the supplies I used for my DIY Grinch bath bombs. You can use whatever brand you like for the ingredients, so if you already have baking soda, food coloring, etc., feel free to use it. This list contains affiliate links, so I may make a small commission from purchases at no additional cost to you. 

• Citric acid
• Baking soda
• Almond oil
• Red candy hearts
• Cucumber melon fragrance oil
• Bright green gel food coloring
• Plastic Christmas ornament balls
• Mixing bowl
• Whisk or fork
• Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

1. Mix together 2 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of citric acid in a bowl, breaking up any clumps.

2. In a separate bowl, mix together approximately a tablespoon of sweet almond oil and several drops of food coloring.

Note: Since the food coloring is water-based, it could set off the fizzing of the dry mixture early, I mixed mine into the oil to dilute it before adding.

3. Add the oil/food coloring mixture to the dry mixture, and quickly mix it together. It may start to fizz a bit, which is why you want to mix it in as quickly as possible! The texture of the mixture should be like damp sand. When you squeeze a handful, it should hold its shape, but it should still feel dry.

• Too dry? If it doesn’t stick together, mix in more oil a tiny bit at a time.
• Too wet? If it’s too wet, then you can mix in more of the dry ingredients at a ratio of 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 tablespoon tablespoon of citric acid.

4. Place a candy heart face-down in one side of a plastic ornament. I intentionally placed mine a little bit off-center, but you could do it centered if you prefer.

5. Scoop the bath bomb mixture over the candy hearts, pressing it down really firmly. Fill the other half of the mold; press it down firmly; and then scoop some more mixture loosely on top.

6. Press the two halves together as hard as you can, and then twist the bottom (side without a heart) half off. You can leave the other side in the mold for at least a few hours or overnight before replacing the other half of the ornament.

Note: Getting the halves to stick together can be pretty tricky. It didn’t work for my first batch, so I had to tweak my recipe for the second one. If you have trouble, don’t be afraid to dump it back in the bowl and add a bit more oil if needed.

7. Thread a string or ribbon through the top of the ornament when it’s put back together, and hang it on your tree!
